Michael, your business gifting page covers thank you and appreciation gifts, retirement, congratulations and holiday gifts, and promises to “hand-deliver your gift straight to their office door.” This page counts those doors. It sizes the kinds of businesses that send those gifts, across the country and state by state, so the question becomes which of them Edible already reaches, and who reaches them: the home office or the local store.

Every figure is a count of business locations with paid staff, from the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns. It sizes each market. It is not yet a list of names.

Who sends business gifts

Six groups, counted across the country. Each location is counted once, under its main industry. The workplace count covers every industry in the file, so it overlaps every other group: never add it to them.

Real estate closings

A closing is a natural moment for a congratulations gift to the buyer. Brokerages, title offices and mortgage brokers close deals all year round.

Who decides: the agent or loan officer on the deal, and at larger offices the office manager who runs client gifts.

About 180,000

locations: about 160,000 real estate brokerages, about 9,800 title and settlement offices and about 9,800 mortgage brokers.

Firms that keep clients for years

Insurance agencies, investment advisers, law firms and accounting firms thank their clients at the holidays and at the end of a busy season. Your page offers thank you gifts for “a client, a partner, or an employee.”

Who decides: the partner or agency owner, and at larger firms the office manager or the client relations lead.

About 500,000

locations: insurance agencies (about 130,000), investment advisers (about 68,000), law offices (about 170,000) and accounting and tax offices (about 140,000).

Head offices

This is where a company sets one gifting program for many sites: staff milestones, retirements, client holidays. One agreement here can cover orders across the country.

Who decides: HR or the people team for staff gifts, the sales or client team for client gifts, often through procurement or an executive assistant.

About 42,000

corporate, subsidiary and regional head offices.

Workplaces with a team to feed

Your page offers gift baskets “the whole team can enjoy” and individually sized gifts “employees can grab and go following an event.” Those orders need a workplace with a team.

Who decides: the office manager, HR, or the workplace team that plans staff appreciation.

About 200,000

workplaces with 100 or more staff, in every industry in the file, and about 1,200,000 with 20 or more.

Hospitals and large medical practices

Hospitals and large practices recognize staff across units and shifts. That is a team gift, ordered by the unit or the practice.

Who decides: the unit or nursing manager, HR, or the practice manager.

About 37,000

locations: about 7,500 hospitals and about 29,000 physician offices with 20 or more staff.

Hotels and business events

Your page describes arrangements as “table centerpieces for business events” that guests can enjoy. Event organizers order for the events they run, and hotels welcome VIP guests and thank the planners who book them.

Who decides: the hotel’s sales or guest services team, and the organizer planning the event.

About 62,000

locations: about 56,000 hotels and motels and about 6,300 convention and trade show organizers.

Where the openings are

Closings come all year. Brokerage, title and mortgage offices, about 180,000 locations, have a reason to send the client a gift every time a deal closes. A firm that orders once has a reason to order again.

National accounts start at a head office. About 42,000 corporate and regional head offices set programs for many sites at once. That is a conversation for the home office, not for a single store.

Local accounts sit around every store. About 200,000 workplaces with 100 or more staff are spread across every state in the table above. Each one is an office door your page promises to deliver to. The useful question is which of them your stores already reach.

Built from the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns, the 2023 file, the latest the Bureau has published, using its national and state tables. A location is an establishment with paid employees in the pay period that includes March 12, 2023, counted under its main industry. Self-employed people with no staff are not counted, so many independent agents and advisers sit outside these figures, and a firm with ten offices counts ten times. Government employers, including public hospitals, are not in this file. The staff sizes (20 or more, 100 or more) come from the same file. Industry codes (NAICS 2017): real estate brokerages 531210, title and settlement offices 541191, mortgage and loan brokers 522310, insurance agencies 524210, investment advisers 523920 and 523930, law offices 541110, accounting and tax offices 5412, head offices 551114, hospitals 622, physician offices 6211, hotels and motels 721110, convention and trade show organizers 561920. The states and the District of Columbia sum to the national figure in every column of the state table. Counts are banded deliberately: under 20 exact, then rounded.
